Hydrochloric acid is an aqueous solution of hydrogenchloride gas (HCl). It is a strong acid, and is a major component in stomach acid. This compound is also used extensively in industry. Hydrochloric acid must be handled with an appropriate safety precaution as it is a highly corrosive liquid.
Uses:
These compounds are used for a variety of purposes, including as reagents in the mass production of organic chemical compounds such as vinyl chloride for PVC plastics and MDI / TDI for polyurethane. Other minor uses include use in home cleaning, gelatin production, food additives, and skin processing. About 20 million tonnes of HCl gas are produced annually. in the 20th century the Leblanc process was replaced by the Slovay process which did not produce hydrochloric acid as a byproduct.
