Manganese Oxide is an inorganic compound with the
formula MnO2. This brown or blackish solid occurs naturally as a pyrolusite
mineral, which is the main manganese ore and component of wishful nodules. The
main use for MnO2 is for dry cell batteries, such as alkaline and zinc-carbon
batteries. MnO2 is also used as a pigment and as a precursor for other
manganese compounds, such as KMnO4. This is used as a reagent in organic
synthesis, for example, for the oxidation of alilikic alcohols.
