Manganese Oxide is an inorganic compound with the formula MnO2. This brown or blackish solid occurs naturally as a pyrolusite mineral, which is the main manganese ore and component of wishful nodules. The main use for MnO2 is for dry cell batteries, such as alkaline and zinc-carbon batteries. MnO2 is also used as a pigment and as a precursor for other manganese compounds, such as KMnO4. This is used as a reagent in organic synthesis, for example, for the oxidation of alilikic alcohols.

Chemical and Physical Properties of Manganese

Manganese is a hard metal and brittle pinkish gray.

This metal is difficult to melt, but easily oxidized. Pure manganese is very reactive and in powder form will burn with oxygen, and dissolve in dilute acid.

Manganese is one of the most abundant metals in the soil which is mainly in the form of oxide and hydroxide compounds.

Manganese occurs mainly as pyrolusite (MnO2), and to a lesser extent as rhodochrosite (MnCO3).

More than 25 million tons of manganese ore are mined every year with major mining areas covering South Africa, Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Gabon and Australia.

Manganese is an important element for all living species. Some organisms such as diatoms, mollusks, and sponges accumulate manganese.

Fish can have up to 5 ppm and mammals up to 3 ppm manganese in their tissues, although it usually does not exceed about 1 ppm.

Use of Manganese

Manganese is very important in the production of iron and steel. The defective steel industry uses around 85% to 90% of total manganese production.

Manganese is a key component of stainless steel and certain alumimum alloys.

Manganese dioxide is also used as a catalyst. Manganese is also used as glass decolorization and makes the glass purple.

Potassium permanganate is a strong oxidizer and is used as a disinfectant.
