Cobalt (II) sulfate is one of the inorganic compounds
with the formula CoSO 4 (H 2 O) x. Usually cobalt sulfate refers to the CoSO 4
hydrate. 7H 2 O, which is one of the most commonly available cobalt salts.
Cobalt is one of three metals which are ferromagnetic
at room temperature. It dissolves slowly in dilute mineral acids, does not
combine directly with hydrogen or nitrogen, but will join when heated, with
carbon, phosphorus, or sulfur. Cobalt also reacts with oxygen and water vapor
at high temperatures, with the result being cobaltous oxide, CoO (with cobalt
form + 2).
Natural cobalt containing stable stable cobalt-59, an
artificial radioactive isotope that has the longest life is cobalt-60 (5.3
half-year) produced by neutron irradiation in nuclear reactors. Gamma radiation
from cobalt-60 has been used in place of X-rays or alpha rays from radium in
the examination of industrial materials to reveal internal structures,
weaknesses, or foreign bodies; in cancer therapy; in sterilization studies; and
in biology and industry as a radioactive tracker. This was eventually replaced
in both industrial and medical radiology with cesium-137 because of the
half-life they reached (30 years).
