Calcium hydroxide is also called slaked lime, or
hydrated lime (lime that is watered down). The mineral name Ca (OH) 2 is
portlandite, because this compound is produced by mixing water with Portland
cement. The suspension of calcium hydroxide fine particles in water is also
called milk of lime (English: milk = milk, lime = lime). The Ca (OH) 2 solution
is called lime water and is a base of medium strength. These solutions react
violently with various acids, and react with many metals in the presence of
water. The solution becomes cloudy when carbon dioxide is passed, because
calcium carbonate is deposited.
Its use:
1. Flocculants in water, sewage treatment, and
management of acid soils.
2. Alkaline material to replace sodium hydroxide
3. Chemical reagents
4. Pesticides to treat the impact of whitefly
infestation. Bemisia tabaci, vector gemini virus.
