General description

Benzyl alcohol (BnOH) is a monoaromatic primary alcohol that is widely used as a solvent and intermediate in cosmetic formulations, the pharmaceutical industry and the aroma industry. This shows bacteriostatic properties. The commercial method for synthesis is by hydrolysis of alkalis from benzyl chloride. [3] Conformation studies with ab initio calculations show gauche cis conformation around the alcoholic group.

Application

Benzyl alcohol can be used for benzylation of toluene.
